PAR RUG INDOOR
Earthy colours and subtle colour-blocking characterise the Par Rug by Sebastian Herkner. The shades of the pattern mirror the earthy, warm tones the designer saw when he visited the Huila region in Colombia. The rug is knotted with fibres that come from the leaves of the fique plant, a wild-growing agave-like tree. The rug is available in five different colour combinations and in three sizes
In Colombia, there’s a long tradition of using the wicker to craft baskets for the arrieros, the coffee pickers, who use them to collect the beans on the plantations in the country’s hinterlands.
“For Caribe, we’ve now chosen a natural wicker that has a long tradition in Colombian craftsmanship to create a chair that’s clearly made for indoor spaces”, says Sebastian Herkner.
“The wicker lends the design a natural look and makes it very comfortable to sit in.
The craftspeople in the ames ateliers use an especially intricate weaving technique for the Caribe Natural pieces.
The result is a particularly dense structure that serves as table top.
The wicker is made from the branches of the Bejuco, a vine-like plant that grows in the coffee regions of Colombia, and it is traditionally used to make baskets for collecting coffee beans.
The plant’s liana-like branches are dried in the sun and prepped for ten days to separate the bark from the inner fibres.
These are then woven by hand around the steel frame in a process that takes five days.

MATERIAL
Each rug is knotted in small ateliers in the Santander region. The yarns are
made up of 28 individual fibres, which are prepared in an elaborate process that takes seven days, which includes washing the leaves and soaking
them for 15 hours before they are dried and brushed by hand. These hardwearing, long fibres have even flame retardant qualities. Then it takes one
experienced artesano 20 days to make the actual rug, setting knot next to
knot on a vertical loom.
CARE TIPS
Some shedding will occur when vacuuming the rug, especially in the beginning. We recommend cutting loose threads with a scissor or pull them in
with a crochet needle. Vacuum rug regularly. As the fibres have been dyed
by hand, each model’s colour varies slightly. To protect the colours, avoid
exposing the product to direct sunlight over long periods and change its
position regularly so the colours age evenly. We also recommend using an
anti-slip underlay to reduce dust collection. Please protect these rugs from
rain and wet conditions. Their surfaces can be wiped with a damp cloth.
They are heat and fire-resistant. Only use a professional rug cleaning service for the entire rug. The dimensions can vary minimally as each rug is
made by hand.
